PODCAST EP 030 - MAXIMALISM & Design Inversion

Maximalism:

Today we are talking about Maximalism, something that is gaining popularity right now, and it is an inverse of the force of Minimalism.

In this episode of the CA-RD Custom Home and Architecture podcast, JD Carling talks about Maximalism and how it is shaking up the world of construction and design. He looks at the history of design trends and how Maximalism fits into the mix. He also examines how it draws inspiration from building in past techniques. JD Carling delves into the factors influencing the direction of architectural design and how Maximalism shapes the future of buildings and spaces.

Maximalism embodies "Everything everywhere all at once."

It exists as an inversion of the minimalist response to excess and comes out of digital excess in an age of external Minimalism.

There is a feeling that the external world needs something more stimulating than the digital one.

Here are key things to listen out for:

1. A recap on different trends in construction and how they are related: Learn how the recent designs are related and how they have been changing since the fifties.

2. The origin of Minimalism: Minimalism came from construction and not just building construction but manufacturing techniques.

3. Things that will influence how architectural designs are laid out: So much has changed, and designs nowadays are more decorative.

4. A lot of things that are not intentional in architecture: A lot of these things aren't planned, like the smiley face design, on stuff or like the shag carpet or the plush chairs, but they are all, they are all converging on this like Maximalism thing.

Notable Quotes

● "The idea was just that the narrative of the architecture of your custom home should be alive. It is not something you are pulling out of a magazine sharing all the current trends."

● "Minimalism, in a way, became dead like modernism. It is like it had these prescriptive things everyone needed to do to stand out. And now you have a generation of people, and I'm not talking about age, but just like in maybe career or focus or wanting to make a statement. So a generation of people wanting to raise their voices in design was sneaking these things in. So you have like fashion art, uh, interior decorating, interior architecture,

● "the attachment to the silicone chip is like bringing, is like exploding out into color in the real world is exploding into the design."

● "You know, architecture, I would say, in one sense, is a long burn. So, you know, a hotel, this is just a good example because they usually budget for this. A hotel will update every five years. They're decor because it gets outdated in a home."

● "The world is flat; the whole world works together. Have you ever read the book, The World is Flat? It is talking about the global economy, but all this flattening of everything together has some relationship to Maximalism, which is like more of a converging or crashing everything together."

● "In graffiti. It doesn't matter. You're just like putting one artist next to another. It's almost like the difference is what makes it nice."

● "Architectural DNA is taking your desires, the nature that your home is gonna be on, and the effects of things like money, building codes, zoning codes, neighbors, the people that are gonna live in your home, how they're influencing that."
